Two residents per caregiver

That number is the whole job. Larger communities typically run around one caregiver to eight residents, and some go considerably higher.

At one to eight you are triaging: you get to the person who is calling out, and the quiet one who has stopped eating waits. At one to two you can sit down with somebody. You notice the smaller appetite on the day it happens rather than a fortnight later. You finish a shift having done the work properly instead of having survived it.

We publish that ratio to families on the front page, which means we have to staff to it. It is a commitment to whoever works here as much as to whoever lives here.

We will not grow past what the caregivers can genuinely handle.

What the work actually involves

Written plainly, because somebody who arrives expecting something else does not stay, and the residents are the ones who pay for that.

Personal care
Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and continence care, for adults who need help with all of it. It is physical work. There is lifting, and there are transfers that take two people.
Medication
Reminders through to full administration, recorded properly, with the attention that implies. Getting this wrong matters more than anything else on the list.
Nights
Somebody is awake here every night, not just on call. Overnight is real work: the resident who gets up at two, the one who is confused about where she is, the one who would not call for help even if she needed it.
The household
Cooking, laundry, keeping rooms clean. In a house this size there is no separate department for it, and nobody here treats it as beneath them.
The part nobody advertises
You will get to know people well, and some of them will die here. We keep residents through hospice where we can, because moving somebody at the end is its own cruelty. That is a hard thing to do repeatedly and we would rather say so now.

What is required of anyone who works here

None of this is our policy. It is what Texas requires of every assisted living facility, and we would tell you about it before you applied rather than after.

Criminal history check
Required before employment. Assisted living facilities are held to a tighter deadline than most: the check must be requested within 24 hours of hire, where other facility types get 72. Certain convictions bar employment outright, and that is set by statute rather than by us.
Registry checks, every year
We are required to search the Nurse Aide Registry and the Employee Misconduct Registry annually for every member of staff, not only at hire, to confirm no finding of abuse or neglect has been recorded.
Training
Ongoing, and documented. That includes training on handling residents' health information, which Texas requires within 90 days of hire and every two years after.
Why we publish this
Families read this page. Somebody deciding whether to move their mother into this house deserves to know that the people in it have been checked, and to see the same answer we would give them on the phone.

Getting in touch

A house this size does not run a constant intake. We keep a list of people we were impressed by, and we call it when a place comes up.

If you have done this work
Call (346) 331-1509 or email Daraanllc@gmail.com. Tell us where you have worked, what the ratio was, and why you are looking. That last one is the question we care about most.
If you have not
Say so. Some of the best caregivers started by looking after a parent. What we cannot teach is whether you notice things, and whether you are kind when nobody is watching.
What happens next
A conversation, then a shift spent here seeing the house and meeting the residents before either of us decides anything. It is the same principle we apply to families: come and see it on an ordinary afternoon.

Equal opportunity. Daraan Assisted Living is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal or Texas law. There is a separate statement about residents and admission on the non-discrimination page.

Come and see the house first.

Before you decide whether you want to work somewhere, it is worth standing in it. Come by on an ordinary afternoon and meet the people who live here.

Or call and ask us anything, including what the hard days are like
